Not every driver wants a three-row SUV; many want something feisty and fun that still provides the SUV feel with an elevated seating position and additional cargo space. For those drivers, a small SUV is a great choice, and two popular options are the Toyota C-HR and Hyundai Kona. However, only one of those SUVs has the reputation of dependability and reliability behind it, and that is the Toyota C-HR.

Toyota updated the C-HR with new standard driver-assist features for the 2021 model year. Every model now features Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0, which includes automated emergency braking, traffic-sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and more. The mid-range XLE model also receives a new Nightshade Edition which blacks out much of the C-HR's exterior trim.
 
For 2021, Hyundai added a similar Night model to the Kona, which provides gloss black interior and exterior trim pieces for a more menacing appearance. The Night model, and the elimination of two exterior colour choices, were the only updates to the Kona for 2021.
 

Exterior

 
The Toyota C-HR has a fun and funky exterior styling with a two-tone colour palette and sharp contours across the interior body. It is definitely more visually appealing than the Hyundai Kona, which offers a more rounded appearance that makes it blend in with most other SUVs on the market.
 

Interior

 

 
Toyota made wise choices inside the C-HR, filling the cabin with durable and high-quality materials. The interior of the C-HR matches the exterior with its youthful and fun appearance and well-laid-out dashboard.
 
While the interior of the Hyundai Kona is comfortable and adequate, it does not offer that level of spunk and shine that the CH-R provides. It has a more typical and grown-up cabin environment that does not generate the same excitement.
 

Technology

 
All models of the Toyota C-HR come standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that sits atop the vehicle's sculpted dashboard. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth phone and music connectivity are a few of the other technology features that all models feature.
 
The Hyundai Kona's touchscreen infotainment system is built into the dashboard, and most models receive a 7.0-inch screen while buyers of the top-level trim are treated to a larger 8.0-inch unit. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability are standard on all trim levels, but the Kona does not provide as much standard technology as the C-HR.
